SYNOPSIS

Lucy, a brilliant but uninspired queer 40-something accountant by day, true crime-binging introvert by evening and weekend, discovers a pattern in the serial murders that have recently plagued the quaint neighbouring town of Barnabus Bay.

NO STARBUCKS MAR THE BEACHFRONT”

Lucy enlists her longtime besty, Aldo (a recent father with a five month-old strapped to his chest) to help crack the case. Through escapades, arguments and adventures, they learn that catching a killer is easy compared to tackling their emotional hangups. Armchair Confidential is a buddy comedy/mystery musical that playfully riffs on existential and midlife crises, and explores our society’s morbid fascination with True Crime.

“NEED SOME DRAMA TO DISTRACT YOU FROM THE BLEAK AND BLACK ABYSS?

WHO’D DELIBERATELY SUBJECT THEMSELF TO THIS?”

Why Armchair Confidential?

I believe that now more than ever, audiences are hungry for entertainment. These past two years have stretched us to our limits. We could all stand to blow off some steam. To escape. To laugh. That’s certainly true for me. I’ve clung to this creative project like a life raft through the riptides of the pandemic, global crises, and personal upheaval. Along the way, Armchair Confidential has come to occupy a special place in my heart. The concept was dreamt up by my wife, Tara, who like so many others, is obsessed with True Crime. We weathered 2021’s winter isolation by brainstorming story arcs over our morning coffee.

I’ve always loved American musical theatre from the Jazz Age to Post-Golden Era, but unfortunately, most of these shows age terribly. I’m interested in exploring how larger-than-life characters; music and lyrics reminiscent of Gershwin, Porter, and Arlen; and an unpredictable whodunnit plot can be reimagined to feel contemporary, satirical, and progressive – even (subtly) political. I want to take a page from Canadian offerings like The Drowsy Chaperone and Schitt’s Creek, and give voice to emotionally complex, traditionally marginalized characters. I want to challenge expectations while inviting the audience on a lighthearted, disarming adventure. On the surface, Armchair Confidential is a buddy comedy/mystery musical, but underneath the dark humour, the show tunes, and the dance numbers, it probes our society’s morbid curiosity. It meditates on themes of post-COVID work-from-home isolation, on the importance of self-care, on the superficiality of influencer culture, on the injustice of prescribed gender roles, and on the perversity of sensationalist news.

What comes next???

At this stage of the project, I’m actively looking for partners – companies or producers to invest in developing the show, and theatres interested in discussing future premiere possibilities. I also just love to nerd out talking about artistic process, dramaturgy, storytelling, and the craft of writing music and lyrics. If you’ve made it this far, why not shoot me a note? I’d love to hear from you!
